In coaching and organizational consulting, the presenting issue is usually not the whole story. Experienced practitioners know this. Even so, they encounter situations where it remains unclear what to make of what they notice, and what, if anything, to say or do in response.
What is going on here? Interpreting What Lies Beneath is a three-module programme for experienced coaches, consultants and leadership faculty to work with Larry Hirschhorn on these questions, using organizational cases and challenging material from their own practice in Balint groups and live labs.
At its centre is the craft of interpretation and intervention. What makes an interpretation useful rather than simply plausible? What can and cannot be heard? How do power, authority, social defenses, character and the wider organizational context shape what is happening? And when can an interpretation become an intervention?
Between modules, participants take their thinking back into practice and return with what they noticed, what they tried and what happened.
The aim is to help experienced practitioners make better sense of challenging situations and exercise better judgment about whether, when and how to intervene.
The programme is certified by CFAR.
